Patience, Persistence, Perspective
Mark Guthier, Wisconsin Union Director

Though the Wisconsin Union has a 100-plus-year history, it has only seen three directors in its time. Mark Guthier took on the title as the third director in 2001 after Ted Crabb's retirement.

"Throughout my time here, I have always started every major initiative by listening. I hope to continue to listen, remove obstacles for students and staff, and find resources they need to be successful." -Mark Guthier

The Association of College Unions International (ACUI) awarded Guthier the prestigious Butts-Whiting Award in 2017. This award was established in 1968 and is named after the Wisconsin Union's first director, Porter Butts, and Edgar Whiting, a longtime association officer and director of the Cornell University Union. The award recognizes and honors outstanding leaders who have made significant contributions to the college union and student activities movement.

In 2019, with the creation of Student Affairs at the University, Guthier was named associate vice chancellor for Student Affairs. In addition to being director of the Wisconsin Union, Mark oversees other Student Affairs areas, such as the Center for Leadership & Involvement (CfLI) and alumni engagement and development efforts.
